Below you can find useful tips to reduce energy costs and minimising our impact on our environment.
Energy Saving Tips – Lighting
These are all things that you can start doing today to help save energy. By reducing the energy you use at home, you'll reduce your impact on the environment and help to prevent climate change. Plus it'll lower your electricity bill!
- Replace standard incandescent light bulbs with energy saving compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), especially in high-use areas. A 20W CFL produces as much light as a 100W incandescent light but uses only 1/5 the energy.
- Install motion sensors on your outside lights so that they only turn on when they need to and don't remain on constantly.
- Paint walls a light colour to reflect more light.
- Turn lights off when you leave a room.
- Use natural light whenever you can - pull curtains back on sunny mornings.
- Use the right strength light bulbs for the right areas, for example a 100 watt bulb might be suitable for the lounge, but not for a bedside lamp.
- Pruning trees and foliage around windows to let in sunlight.
- If you're designing a new home or renovation, it's worth thinking about how to make best use of natural light. You can also design your home or renovation to maximize natural light, through good design and placement of windows and skylights. Open plan living, and translucent doors and partitions, can also help to spread light around.
- Don’t use spotlights if you need to light the whole room.
- Use dimmers for incandescent bulbs to reduce the energy used. This also makes them last longer.
- Use low-wattage lights shining directly onto work areas and lower-level background lighting, rather than lighting a whole room to the light level you need for work.
